The Pain in Giving Space
01:45
|
|
||
Just a whispered kiss on the cheekbone,
chapped twisted lips scream at a cell phone.
Drain your lungs 'till they both start collapsing
if it means that it will keep you from relapsing.
What happened to that boy that I once knew?
Threw his heart around like he believed he was supposed to.
Letters made the words and then the lines and the ellipses...
easy to imagine, now his life is a mystery.
Cut me down the middle, take a look inside.
Wouldn't you agree that I'm inadequately supplied?
Tough to find a part with a shred of pride,
it's tough to find the heart when the pulse subsides.
I didn't wanna write another fuckin' love song,
so I put a "fuckin" 'cause I knew it wouldn't belong.
Sentiment and sediment we lay upon our loved ones;
bodies just like memories, we bury them then move on.

Salem
03:19
|
|
||
He had to leave, so he pushed and shoved till he managed free.
Hard to believe he could love somebody
hung up on his tricks, strung up to the sticks like a witch in Salem.
Hard to believe that she ever forgave him.
He's said his piece, don't point that gun, were it not for him,
she'd never know how to hate somebody.
Oh, to live with the guilt he was hiding,
"To take that weight, we had to blame our timing."
To the barely pardoned,
I know times were hard and
you died old and scarred,
but that's a price you pay.
Another inch apart,
another broken heart,
another life will start,
and we'll both be okay.
Tear our lives apart,
but fuck, we'll be okay.
To say you're avant-garde,
then build a house of cards
to try to disregard
how you spent all those days:
in your friend's backyard and
in her mom's rose garden.
"Home is where the heart is"
she would always say.
Home is where the heart is.
Her's is here in Salem.

Blue-Eyed Hours
03:42
|
|
||
Why does it all change when the sun goes down?
What answers am I seeking in the corners of the darkest parts of me that are so used to tossing problems around?
Lighting fires and drowning out.
Lending time to the blue-eyed hours that I couldn't live without.
Chasing rabbits in and out of holes.
Hid my habits in the splits and folds.
A shambled fable, fading hard and fast.
Couldn't shake the feeling that my shaky feelings and their shaky feelings and their shaky feelings couldn't last.
I'm tired of the voices in the woods, murmuring a verse about the person they know I turned out to be. Maybe I am on my side?
I'm tired of the hands up on the clock, pushing us to think about the people we know we turned out to be. Maybe time is on our side?
Maybe time is on our side.

Fits

I know I make it hurt to feel,
I know you're feeling something real,
I know the feeling, when you love somebody.
I know the wounds you pick and peel,
I know the time they take to heal,
I know the feeling, when you love somebody.
Two faces shake a veil and light,
bury our feelings deep inside,
and all we get is another day of it.
Up to our necks in biting words,
invite the hurt and make it worse.
I refuse to make a game of it.
Talkie tongue, twisted, tied
Things get tough, and that's when I
find that love is the hardest part to give.
Taking time just to sit,
throwing fits, know that this
life is all that we got to live.

Sunshowers
02:49
|
|
||
Hey, you wanted me for something new?
Well, I tuned you out - I heard you screaming and shouting about the time that I should have made for you.
But I make time for the simple things
that bring me smiles and help me forget a while.
I don't know what you wanted but you won't find it here,
unless you're looking for a quick way to the bottom.
I can't remember if I cared, but I will make this clear:
all I love is my dog and the sunshowers.
Hey dawn, could you close that winking eye?
I lay awake, in your blurry rays and my day may want another minute to crack her smile.
'Cause I wake for the simple things
that bring toothy smiles and stick with me a while.
I don't know what you wanted but you won't find it here,
unless you're looking for a quick way to the bottom.
I can't remember if I cared, but I will make this clear:
all I love is my dog and the sunshowers.

Awash
04:58
|
|
||
Take my time on the gravel road
winding through the twisted oak.
I'm too far now to turn around,
like a bird I'm beckoned back down South
to the setting sun on a beach I call my home.
Sunrise fields, a cherry red,
words I've thought but never said.
My mind is on the coast, on the horizon line;
the ocean we were born in is the same place we all go to die.
Tear the sky at the seams,
see that time is just stuck between the blue and green -
and it means nothing at all.
We will meet at the sea,
have a smoke and then we'll joke about all of our dreams -
how they meant nothing at all.
After all the places I have been,
the time has come to shed this skin.
But I will not atone, for I am not alone,
and we have a pact to do it all again.
I hear that we're defined by the ones we leave behind.
Well, I've abandoned many hearts, and marks left to remind
girls of what they've meant to me, and men of what they should've seen,
and mankind what it should have been.
To love and lose, to live and learn -
no, never love, just live and turn
to broken bones, unravel knots,
sundown barefoot from the dock.
And we, children born of the sea,
have had our time, we've lived our lives.
Set sail, set free. Awash, we bleed.
We whisper to our moms and dads,
they've long been gone, but I'll raise a glass
and sing three cheers for twenty years,
next time, hope to face our fears.
Maybe see each other growing old.
Our hearts are warm, but the water's cold.
The water's cold.

People
03:46
|
|
||
Sweet people in my ear, whispering what I'd like to hear,
stories of lovestruck cast in gold, it makes me bold, it makes me bolder.
Sweet love I took my chances, ink out all my failed romances,
if I kill my brain I'm told, it makes me old, it makes me older.
Living life by never trying - fuck the truth you keep denying.
What has changed in the last ten years?
How the good god damn did you end up here?
A deaf ear to the floor won't hear the fear felt here before,
it's hopeless trying, prying wide the eyes I tried to shut before.
People come and people go.
Sweet memories lost in time, to feel like they were never mine,
sweet transience it takes its toll, and makes me old, it makes me older.
Sweet words I once assumed would take the old and make it new,
kill my brain but save my soul, it makes me cold, it makes me colder.

Drawn Blood
03:01
|
|
||
Nightmare city, people getting busy,
got me feeling like I know I should.
Do you feel the same way too?
Head out on the town, pull out all the stops,
point out all the things we wish we were
but we're not.
It's a little bit of love and a little bit of sacrifice.
It's a little bit of love and a little bit of drawn blood.
It's a little bit of love and a little bit of compromise.
It's a little bit of love and a little drawn blood.
Son, for a kid, you're quite a boy,
we'll make you a man yet.
Eat your soup, feel good;
you'll be driving cars, getting liquored up, and splitting wood.
Like your old man did, back when he was home,
now you're all alone, now you're all alone.
Old man did, back when he was home.
Now your heart is broke, now you're all alone.
Build a house, burn it down around you.
Choking out - on the ground is where they found you,
fingers around a book bound titled "One Thousand Things You're Bound To".
It's a little bit of love and a little bit of sacrifice.
It's a little bit of love and a little bit of drawn blood.
It's a little bit of love and a little bit of compromise.
It's a little bit of love and a little drawn blood.
Kid, for a boy, you're quite a son,
we'll make you a father yet.
Do your work, feel good;
you'll be hitting bars, getting liquored up, and splitting wood.
Like your old man did, back when he was home,
when he was all alone, now you're all alone.
Old man did, back when he was home.
when you hardly spoke, now you're all alone.
Build a house, burn it down around you.
Choking out, on the ground is where they found you,
fingers around a book bound titled "Love is Everywhere and It Is All Around You".

Fifteen

What would your daddy say if he saw your boyfriend
standing out on your driveway with a helmet?
Leather jacket with a special pocket for his cigarettes.
He lights one up.
What would your mama say if she saw your best friend
wearing skanky tops you know she bought secondhand?
Try to get the boys lining for up for her attention,
but no one cares.
What would your daddy say if he had the shelf fixed,
and found your secret stash and both your bongs in the process?
Forget about the party Friday, never seen him this pissed.
You're fucked, fucked, fucked.

Our Timing (Car Crash)
03:41
|
|
||
She fell asleep, jumped curb, wrote off her mother's jeep.
Took down two trees, and she hit somebody
who was walking home, from his friend's place down the road.
He forgot his phone, but he said he'd go get it tomorrow.
He can never tell, if it's right or wrong to make himself
look unwell, in hopes she'll help get him the hell out of his shell.
It's hard to speak, with ribs that curl and jab
and poke at all the love he has but can't seem to let anyone else see.
I hold a moment in my head sometimes.
Car crash and aftermath all unfold behind these eyes.
Burning wrecks, broken necks - and it all serves to remind me
that we don't know our timing at all.
He had to leave, so he pushed and shoved till he managed free.
Hard to believe he could love somebody
who was walking home, from her boyfriend's down the road.
She had her phone, but it was dead, she never charged it.
I fell asleep, don't point that gun, were it not for me,
she'd never know how to love somebody.
It's hard to breathe, with guilt that gives and takes
can't live down my mistakes, I shouldn't have been driving.
